Folk guitar

Doc Watson, who owned the prototype of the Vintage Artist, said, “This is the Dreadnought I’ve been looking for all my life.” In 1991, Richard Hoover collaborated with vintage experts to identify the most desirable qualities of the iconic Pre-War D-18. Maestro Watson’s contributions to the concept were born of an appreciation of the clarity of Mahogany’s tone and his requirements for playability. At the time, Doc had put as many hours into Rockabilly on a Les Paul as he had on the Dreadnought. His lack of preoccupation with a particular vintage model played perfectly with SCGC’s philosophy to ‘combine, not copy.’ After Doc’s test pilot duties on the prototype, he offered this thoughtful testimonial: “Son, what do I have to do to keep this guitar?”

We present this instrument as the tonal equal and technical superior to the most respected Pre-War guitars. To achieve the characteristic EQ and tone of the legendary Doc Watson, aka ‘the Vintage Artist,’ this instrument features an advanced, scalloped X-bracing for powerful bass, complemented by the clear tone and definition of master grade Mahogany.

Excellent guitar. Beautiful well balanced tone. It has a warm sound. It sounds a bit more mellow than for example a Martin. It is very dynamic. You can play it softly and it becomes very intimate, but you can also hit it hard and it will growl heavily. Nevertheless it will always remain in balance. The basses are present, the mids are definitely there and it has very subtle trebles.
In terms of playability it is what you would expect from Santa Cruz. Perfect. The same can be said about the finish. This is such a beautiful guitar. Just amazing!!!
I liked the string spacing. It has one mm more spacing at the bridge than my martin HD28 from 2018. At the nut, they are exactly the same although the nut with of the martin is 1 3/4 inch and the Santa cruz is 1 11/16. However the strings are a bit closer to the edge with the Santa cruz, making the spacing the same. So it's a good strummer, but it is also excellent for finger picking.

I was surprised how light this guitar is.

This is one of the best guitars I've ever had in my hands. It is excellent for recording.
I think the best word to describe it is warm, mellow and very subtle. Refined.

One more remark about Star's Music. These guys are just great. They are very professional, follow up everything very closely and proactively communicate on whatever there might be. In my case after they inspected the guitar before shipping, they saw some slight scratches on the pick guard, so they send it to a luthier before sending it to me.
You feel that they know their stuff and they like their job. Top store

cheers
Peter
