Introduction to Yamaha Disklavier Piano

The Disklavier is a Yamaha brand, referring to an automatic piano system factory-installed exclusively on Yamaha and Bösendorfer pianos. This system allows the piano to play by itself without altering its operation. It offers the ability to faithfully record a pianist's performance, including velocity, nuances, and pedal usage, all of which can be stored for later playback. Recordings are compatible with the well-known and appreciated MIDI format by musicians for its low memory consumption.

Introduced in 1987, Disklaviers have undergone significant advancements over the years. They have incorporated technological developments such as floppy disk storage, then via USB support, CD playback, the addition of MIDI and audio tracks, internet connectivity, the addition of the Silent function, and sound banks. Additionally, they offer video connectivity and applications capable of synchronizing image and sound, all accompanied by increasingly compact and discreet control units.

Often wrongly perceived as mere jukeboxes, Disklaviers are actually excellent tools for piano learning. They allow self-listening, the ability to slow down or speed up recordings, work on loops, transpose, play with accompaniments, "copy" improvisation patterns, play pieces alone in four hands, and much more. The possibilities for application are numerous and astonishing.

If you own a Disklavier piano from a previous generation, it is sometimes possible to upgrade it by adding features or substituting the DKC-850 control unit. By following the provided link, you can access all necessary information, categorized by serial number, model, and accompanied by photos.

The ENSPIRE Disklavier

The latest generation is called Enspire (EN). This is the ultimate version! Indeed, the control unit has practically disappeared in favor of a smartphone or tablet application. It's now the app that will evolve, not your control unit!

The application is very intuitive and practical, offering 300 songs covering all styles and formats (MIDI and audio). Yamaha has developed websites streaming music on demand. Your piano is now directly connected to your internet router via WiFi or Ethernet cable.

What is the Silent piano (SC3)?

It's a remarkable acoustic piano that can be played silently while allowing you to adjust the volume, retaining the rich and complex sound characteristic of an acoustic instrument. Switch to silent mode and the hammers stop just before striking the strings, while the key movements are read by optical sensors. These trigger the internal sound generator which reproduces a digitally sampled acoustic piano sound in your headphones. The result is a natural acoustic piano sound that you can enjoy playing at any time, without worrying about your surroundings.
